Real wedding La Jolla, California

We just got back some photos from an incredible event designed by LHE SoCal. The wedding took place at the beautiful Hilton Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA. This was he location of the 2008 U.S. Open. I've got great looking images from Rich Cook, I may end up breaking these into three posts, so come back later for more. In some of these images you can see the groom showing his Scottish heritage by wearing a kilt.

Great idea for save the dates from Once Wed

Once Wed recently featured a faux vintage concert poster as a save the date, and I thought it was very cool. This could be a fun way to express yourself, and you should consider making a larger size version of your invitation to frame and keep. Just to expand on this, you could also model your invite off a vintage film poster, or possibly advertisement, I think anything along these lines could be perfect. I recommend, however, that you do your best to tie the faux poster in with the motif of your event. Below is a sample from the feature on Once Wed, and then some vintage posters I love. These posters can also be great inspiration for typefaces and typography from a different era.

I've become obsessed with looking for more samples, there are tons of them on the web, just google vintage concert posters, or movie posters, you may want to consider including a band or movie you like. I searched for the doors and found some really iconic stuff.

Real Wedding New York City loft

This was one of our favorite recent real weddings! It took place in a Manhattan loft.  The couple wanted a 1930s black & white theme.  Guests were asked to wear black or white attire, and the "Let's Misbehave" theme, which references a Cole Porter song, was definitely reflected in the decor and atmosphere. The wedding took place in a two-floor 11,000 sq. ft. loft, with the most amazing decor.  At the end of the night, the stunning bride and groom ended up in the roof-top pool, white bikini and all!  And, if this loft looks familiar to you, it's because an episode of "Sex & the City" was filmed here.  Peter Callahan  provided catering and Artfool provided decor.  The famous DJ Tom Finn  played music all night long!  We LOVE DJ Tom--he is the best, and was the DJ at Lyndsey's wedding.  LHE , of course, produced the event.

Thanks to Elizabeth Anne Designs

I just wanted to say thanks to Elizabeth Anne Designs for having us guest blog last week. We love their blog and it was our pleasure to contribute. I've included the most popular post from our guest blogging series below.

Bouquets and Dresses

Here are some of our favorite bouquets from past clients. All of these are of varying aesthetic, and unique to each wedding. Regardless of personal preference, it is key that the bouquet remains distinctive. We advise our clients to allow their floral designers to be creative when designing the bouquets, although you may love a specific color or flower, you want to carry an arrangement that showcases your style in a distinctive way.
The photos in the top two panels are courtesy of Christian Oth. The panel below is courtesy of Jeff Tisman. The floral was done by Artfool.

Seersucker invitation suite from sd+p

The bride was instrumental in bringing this design to fruition as she commissioned us from the beginning save the date all the way through to the personal stationery, and everything in between. We started by making handmade paper and letterpressing it to look like the seersucker fabric of her bridemaid's gowns, then as components were defined we used our paper inventory.

Long before a planner was involved, this bride made sure no detail was overlooked, as she had a true understanding of how a  graphic design identity/vision can connect all the elements of a wedding.

Real Wedding in The Hamptons

The groom was a New York City firefighter, the bride was a pharmaceutical sales rep and together they made for a beautiful couple. The venue was a private residence in Watermill, NY. The pink and teal color palette was perfect for a late-summer wedding. The ceremony took place on the property overlooking the bay. Guests then moved to the pool area for a Tuscan themed cocktail hour, as the couple was engaged in Italy. Artfool provided amazing arrangements, incorporating seashells and starfish to compliment the beachside setting. This wedding is featured in the current issue of The Knot NYC Metro. The photos are courtesy of the fantastic Maggie Heinzel-Neel.

Real wedding in New York

Here is an event Carrie coordinated in May. The couple wanted to capture New York as an element of their wedding. They incorporated TriBeCa, Central Park , and traveled throughout Manhattan riding on the double decker tour bus rented for their guests. The photos are courtesy of the talented Brian Dorsey. The collage below shows a sample of the images, but if you click, it will bring up a full slideshow of additional photos.

Inspired romance invitation suite from sd+p

Our client did not want the mundane elements found on beach invites [starfish, waves, shells, etc] part of her custom wedding suite.

Instead, we used language to evoke the sentiments of the sea, and set the tone for the couple's save the date. then using the same color palette, typography and printing techniques we brought cohesiveness to the wedding invitation, whose subtle pattern was inspired by the wedding gown's embroidery. Please click on the images to enlarge.

Amazing Calvin Klein 40th anniversary party

Revamping the Highline in Chelsea has been on the New York development schedule for a number of years. I thought the sprawling illustrations of an amazing boardwalk running above chelsea were just a figment of the artists imagination, and that all of the supposed hotels that would open in the area were just simple promotion. The Highline, however, is beginning to show some serious signs of life. Being the location of Calvin Klein's 40th anniversary party is certainly a step in the right direction. The company hired John Pawson to build a one of a kind structure over the Highline that would be solely used for this event. NYtimes reports that this, combined with a light sculpture from James Turrell, cost the company $3 million. The party was amazing, everyone attended, except Calvin Klein, good times had by all. If you are into "red carpet" shots of celebrities click here. Look below for a couple pics of the unique locale.

The fabulous Marc Jacobs at Fashion Week

As my readers know, I love Marc Jacobs. Celebs were out in force to check out MJ's new line, and he did not disappoint. NYTimes described MJ's runway show as a "journey." His show spanned many decades for inspiration and succeeded in creating a modern look. Below are a few of my favorites, click on the images to go to the NYMag gallery.
